Are You Rushing Ahead of God?
Waiting seasons in life can be frustrating. When we have a clear vision of what we want to achieve, but it's not happening yet, it's easy rush ahead of God. It becomes much easier to wait once we realize that there is a purpose for every season in our lives. Waiting for our dreams to come true isn't always fun, but the growth that happens in a waiting season is very important. Each season in life will prepare us for what will come next, so if we rush ahead of God we will notice that things won't work out as we had hoped.
God's timing is perfect. If we choose to trust God we will notice that everything will fall into place according to His perfect timing. I have a limited view of reality, but God sees everything. I can only make wise choices when I choose to let God into the decision making process. God already knows my future and His plans for me are good. When I let God lead in my life I have peace. I know that God doesn't make any mistakes. Half of the time I don't know what the heck I'm doing in life, but God is never confused about the future. When I choose to follow God's plan for my life I know that He will lead me to exactly where I need to be.

My Beauty, Relationships and Career is what makes me valuable?
As little children we quickly pick up on what the culture around us values. Our culture teaches us that we will find ultimate happiness and fulfillment in many things that can never truly satisfy our souls. Three of the most popular places we tend to misplace our identity in is our beauty, our relationship status and our careers.
Movies, Women's magazines, social media etc. all send us the same message: "The more beautiful you are the more valuable, fulfilled and happy you will be." When we believe this lie we end up obsessing about how we look. We feel insecure about our appearance and spend a lot of time, effort and money on trying to look more beautiful. But many of the most beautiful people in this world have opened up about how insecure and unfulfilled they felt even as they worked as models or were considered one of the most beautiful people in the world. Our culture teaches us that we need to look a certain way to be happy and fulfilled. God tells us in the Bible that we look exactly the way he intended for us to look. We are all unique, beautiful and of great worth, because we are all made by God himself, He designed us.
Our relationship status is another popular place where we tend to misplace our identity. Look at any movie and you will notice that we are taught that romantic love is what will give us ultimate happiness and fulfillment in life. God teaches us something different, he teaches us that it's only in knowing Him that we can find ultimate happiness and fulfillment. God is perfect and He will never fail me in this life, but my husband will, because he is human. I love my husband and he brings a lot of joy to my life, but he is able to do that mainly because I don't expect him to have God's role in my life.
Romantic relationships become miserable when we expect our significant other to do for us what only God himself can do. God alone is the only one who will love you no matter what, God alone is the only one who will always be there for you to help, listen and care for you. No human-being will ever be able to love you perfectly and unconditionally, only God can do that. If I believe that my relationship status is connected to my worth and value as a woman I will also be discontent with being single and create an unhealthy expectation in my heart that once I'm in a romantic relationship then I will finally be happy and fulfilled. Nope, that's not how it goes. I will never be happy or fulfilled in a romantic relationship if I wasn't already happy and fulfilled as a single lady.
The third place where we tend to misplace our identity is in our careers. When we believe that our careers are connected to our worth and value as a woman we become very focused on achievements and get anxious/stressed when we are not achieving at top level. We were all created by God to do good works, but or work is not what gives us our worth and value as a person. God does not value a woman who works as a CEO any higher than an old retired lady who doesn't work.
We are all called by God to love Him and to love other people. God isn't impressed by how much we achieve, what title we have at work or how much power we have. Sometimes you can see a small child who is more caring and loving to others than some important business owner who has become focused on selfish ambition. Our careers can (and should) be used to love and serve God&people with, but our achievements will never give us more worth in God's eyes. There is nothing we can do for God to love us more, and there is nothing we can do that would make God love us less. God's love for me and you is always completely unconditional and freely given, you could never earn it.

Greg's Story
I find it interesting to listen to people's stories about how they found God. Every story is unique because every person has had a unique experience in life. Greg is a doctor who had everything he thought he needed to be happy. He had a successful career, an expensive car and nice clothes. He had also achieved success in sports like running and triathlon, but he still felt empty inside and wasn't content. Greg was an arrogant person and an atheist so his Christian neighbors really irritated him. Greg decided that he would read through the Bible so that he could prove to his neighbors that they were hypocrites.
As Greg studied the Bible he was blown away by the fact that Jesus claimed to be God in human form. He had never heard that before. As time went on Greg wanted to change in a few areas of his life where he knew he wasn't a good person, but he couldn't change himself. One day he decided to get down on his knees and ask God to forgive him for his sins and change him as a person. Greg felt a peace from that day on that he had never felt before and it became evident to Greg's wife that her husband was a changed man. Greg had started caring about other people in a way that he had never done before.
Greg explains that the difference between Christianity and other world religions is that all other religions are about people trying to reach God, while Christianity is about God himself coming down to reach people. Greg says that when you invite Jesus into your heart your life will never be the same, and the ultimate proof of Jesus being God is the change he creates in each person who has encountered him.

Possessions, Power & Perfection
New Year’s Eve is coming up and a lot of people are
thinking about what their New Year’s resolution should be for 2016. I have a
few ideas myself, but today I wanted to write about my resolution from 2015. My
New Year’s resolution last year was what I called “Finding Freedom”. I decided
it was time to choose freedom in particularly three different categories in
life: possessions, beauty and career. On the other hand, it is almost
impossible to break free from the culture’s expectations on us unless we
replace each cultural ideal with something new.
The three cultural ideals I wanted to break free from were:
materialism, perfect beauty and power&money. When it comes down to possessions
we are constantly fed that we should buy more and newer stuff. Beauty is
extremely important in our culture and the ideal we are all encouraged to
strive towards is perfection. Our careers are one of the main things in our
culture that define us and give us our value as a human being. The more power
we have and the more money we make the higher value we get.
I see a lot of people talk about these negative culture
ideals on social media, the biggest problem is how do you break free from the
negative ideals? I see women talk about how they won’t tolerate the negative
beauty ideal for example, but the following week they are considering if they
should get plastic surgery. I don’t blame them, it’s almost impossible to not follow
the ideals in our culture, unless we replace them with new ideals. We can’t
just hate that the culture is telling us to strive for perfection, we have to
start striving for something else. If we decide to stop striving for perfect
beauty, power and materialism we will still move towards these ideals
subconsciously. We are fed these ideals daily through commercials,
advertisements, magazines, TV and social media.
Our survival instinct will naturally adapt to any surrounding,
if we are surrounded by magazines that tell us we need botox we will soon be
convinced that we need botox. If we are following tons of people on Instagram
who believe that perfect beauty is what we should strive for we will also start
striving for this ideal, whether we like the ideal or not. “You are what you
eat” they say, the same is true when it comes to what we look at. Your
environment will always form you, so if you don’t want to become like it,
change your environment.
I didn’t want to waste any more time in life striving for cultural
ideals I don’t agree with, I needed new ideals to strive towards. I decided
that instead of materialism I was going to strive for the opposite: Minimalism.
I changed out the perfect beauty ideal for natural beauty. I didn’t want to
strive for power and money in the career category since research is
showing us that neither one of these things are what bring joy and
satisfaction to human beings. I decided I wanted to strive for what I call loving
work in the career category. I want to love the work I do, and I want my
work to give me opportunities to love others. I personally believe that’s the
whole point with work, to love others as we serve others through our jobs.
As I googled the new ideals I had chosen I found out
I wasn't the only person who was tired of our culture’s negative ideals.
There are already a huge movement out there on social media with minimalists,
women who strive for natural beauty rather than
perfection, and people who want to do work they love. I personally believe
that the change this world so badly needs right now is going to come through
the younger generations, I’m so proud of what the millennials are doing around
the world.
What I needed to do to be able to stay free from the negative ideals that I had been striving
towards for so many years of my life was to make some changes to my environment.
I threw out all the catalogs that came in the mail (I already have enough stuff)
and I stopped reading women’s magazines filled with headlines like “When is the
right time to start taking botox?”. I started reading blogs by inspiring people
who love the work they do and I stopped following people on social media who
strive for perfect beauty and materialism. These changes made it a lot easier
to resist the urge to shop more, want to change the way I look, or choose the
job that will make the most money.
During the spring of 2015, when all the magazines in the grocery
store had headlines like “get the perfect body for summer”, I would think to
myself “I’m perfect just the way I am, I don’t need to change a thing”.
That’s a huge change for someone who has been on the border to developing
eating disorders for many years. I wish I could have felt that way already ten
years ago. I hate that so many young women dislike the way they look because of
the negative beauty ideals our culture still feeds them.
My possessions have become a lot fewer during the past twelve
months, and our home has become a lot more organized as a result of that. I
love sticking to fewer pieces of clothing in my wardrobe. It’s so easy to get dressed when I love every piece I own, because nowadays I
only buy something if I truly love it. When it comes to career choices I’m
excited about all the new opportunities that open up when you stop looking at
work as only something that will give you a paycheck at the end of the month.
There’s so much more to work than making a lot of money and building up a good
retirement fund. Work is our chance to leave a legacy on this Earth, to change
the world as we love and serve other people. I’m excited to see what year 2016
will bring!
