What can break a marriage?

Every book I’ve read on marriage says the same thing about having close friends of the opposite sex: it’s not a good idea. When we are married and still have close friends of the opposite sex we end up building an emotional closeness in that relationship. Emotional intimacy should be reserved for our spouse alone. We can have close friends of the opposite sex, but it’s better to see them in a group setting. One on one meetings with friends of the opposite sex builds too much emotional intimacy. Recommendations like these can seem unnecessary or silly, but the experts know what they are talking about.

Audrey Meisner was close friends with a much younger man and for many years he remained just that, a friend. She never imagined that she would end up having and affair with him one day since he was much younger, and they were just friends.

Bob and Audrey Meisner also had another struggle that so many of us face, they were busy people, very busy. Where do you fit in time to connect and work on your marriage when your schedules are packed with the kids, work and ministry? Bob and Audrey tell their story about how in a busy season of their lives Audrey ended up having an affair that almost ended their marriage.

Bob had a bold and mature mentor who challenged him to forgive his wife, just like God forgave him on the day of salvation. Bob wanted to punch his mentor in the face for even suggesting forgiveness as an option, but over time he chose to do just that, even if the hurt was deep and it took time to heal from it.

Slow Weekends

My husband is Jamaican and I'm Finnish-Swedish, we both come from cultures that are pretty good at enjoying life and finding a balance between work and rest. Today we live in North America where life balance is almost extinct. I get the feeling that it's normal to be exhausted, busy and over-worked in this part of the world. We are expected to tire ourselves out from working long days and commuting on weekdays. On weekends we are expected to train for a marathon/triathlon, take our kids to multiple activities/sports and attend some cultural event in the city. No wonder humans are exhausted in 2017. Time for rest is seldom scheduled.

In our house rest and time with family is something that we value highly and therefore we prioritize it. Last weekend we were busier than usual so this past weekend we were extra focused on making time for rest. Different people find different things to be relaxing, for me resting is to spend time with family and friends. I also enjoy spending time in nature or reading a book or magazine.

On Friday evening my husband and I had our weekly Date Night. I was tired and tempted to cancel the whole event but I'm glad I made the effort to get all dressed up because we ended up having a really fun evening out.

On Saturday we decided to leave the busy city-life behind for a day and take a drive to Wasaga Beach.

This view awaited us at Wasaga Beach. Hello September, I like the way you look this year!

When we went to Wasaga Beach on Labor Day weekend a couple of weeks ago I thought that was the last beach trip for the season. Nope. Summer of 2017 was more rainy than usual in Toronto, but September has been warmer than usual instead. God is funny, and awesome! :)

It was +29 degrees Celsius at Wasaga Beach on Saturday so I decided to cool down with an Island soda.

On Sunday morning we went to church and afterwards we had some brunch. In the afternoon I relaxed by taking a long walk in the neighborhood and along some nature trails. I love living in the suburbs where nature is never far away.

Canada, Oh Canada. Every time I see the Canadian flag in the neighborhood I'm reminded of how blessed I am to get to live in this beautiful country. I'm so grateful for the life I get to live.

Never talk bad about your spouse in public

Jeff and Alyssa talk about why it's important to commit to never talking bad about your spouse in public. We see this type of behavior a lot in movies and TV shows, it makes great entertainment on TV but in real life it will create an atmosphere of death in your marriage rather than an atmosphere of life. Our words are so powerful, we can choose to either speak life or to speak death into our relationship.

No matter who we marry our spouse will have things about them that irritates us, but gossiping about these things with friends will not make things better. Jeff and Alyssa suggest that we talk to our spouse about the things that bothers us rather than to complain about our spouse with others. It's also a great idea to have an older married couple to talk to and get marriage advice from. You can both agree on a couple that can become your marriage mentors. This couple will become the people you always go to with your struggles when you are in need of outside advice. Your marriage mentors will be a safe place to ask questions, talk about your issues and receive wisdom because you know that this couple is for you and want your marriage to succeed.

Spending time with friends & family

I've had a couple of wonderful weeks with friends and family coming to visit us in Toronto. It's so fun to get to spend a lot of time with your loved ones. I don't get to see my friends and family from Finland very often since I moved abroad six years ago so when we get to see each other it's a party every day!

The weather has been great in Toronto this month so it's been fun to be able to eat dinner outside on the patio and show our guests the city. We get to do a lot of different things together because we all like different activities. My mom wants to go shopping, my dad wants to go see a hockey game and I want to go hiking. When you mix all these different activities together it becomes a very fun and relaxing vacation. :)

A Social Media Break

I'm so excited, tomorrow one of my friends from Finland is coming to visit me in Toronto and on Saturday my Mom and Dad will be arriving in Toronto. I want to make the most out of this time with friends and family so I will take a social media break for the rest of the week. I know updating your social media accounts often is considered important in today's culture, but if you ask me I say: "Life's too short to update your social media every single day of your life, especially when the people you love are coming to visit!" :) Have a good week everyone!

Summer Moments

Today it's September 1st and next week the fall season starts. Last Weekend my husband and I enjoyed one of the last weeks of summer by taking a trip to Cobourg on Friday evening.

We got the chance to enjoy a nice evening swim in Lake Ontario in Victoria Park.

The beach has been "my gym" during the summer months, biking and swimming are my favorite workouts during summer. I love going to the beach in the evening so that I can take a 30-45 min workout swim in the lake and enjoy nature at the same time.

After I'm done with my swim I like to sit on the beach for a while and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

My favorite healthy breakfast during summer has been a bowl of Greek yogurt with a mountain of fresh fruit and berries on top. I've had this same breakfast on most days during the months of June, July and August.

On the weekends I've made it a tradition to treat myself to a sweet breakfast, usually a croissant or a maple pecan danish. I have enjoyed being able to have my breakfast in the park on Saturday mornings this summer.

After breakfast my husband and I like to take a stroll in our neighborhood and enjoy the summer breeze and being able to be outdoors.

Saturday mornings are very slow and relaxing at our house, a time to catch up and talk about what we've experienced during the week.

Next week when fall arrives it will be time to change out our summer routine with breakfasts in the park and beach trips for other things. I look forward to going on hikes in the fall and enjoying wearing something else than just dresses and skirts, I've hardly worn my jeans at all during the summer months.

The most exciting thing about the fall is that we will have guests from Finland come visit us in Toronto in September. I look forward to spending a lot of time with friends and family. I'm also very excited about our adoption journey entering a new stage this fall, we are getting closer and closer to getting to adopt our children every week. :)

Time with people that we love

Shauna Niequist speaks about friendship and prioritizing spending time with the people that we love. We all need to surround ourselves with people who can speak life and love into our lives. Your friends should be people who celebrate your successes and who want you to do well in life. Once you surround yourself with people who can both give and receive love your friendships will become one of the main things in life that help you grow as a human being.
